How to Stop Overthinking: A Guide to Building Habits that Last

Ever wonder how to establish new routines, like actually establish them? You know, for all those things we wannnnnnt to do but just so easily slip through the cracks? Well here are some answers.

TLDR: it all comes down to habits.

From psychology we’ve learned that establishing habits is the key to creating new routines.

And when those habits are things that can improve your mental and physical health, such as Chorus, they can truly change your life.

Tips for Building Habits

Here are a couple tips to build habits:

1) Do the habit at the same time every day

  • This will create a trigger in your mind that makes you start automatically thinking of the activity at that moment in your day
    • And remember, the goal here is to make it happen as automatically as possible so it’s easier to prioritize healthy things like meditating!
  • For Chorus, even if you only have 10 minutes, do a Chorus 10 every morning when you wake up before you start your day
  • Then it will become habitual (meaning it takes no active thought) – like brushing your teeth. You don’t think hard about the time to brush your teeth, you just do it automatically

2) Do it frequently & consistently

  • Establishing a new behavior chain (aka a habit) takes lots of practice, so the more frequently and consistently you do it, the faster it will become a habit

3) Accountability

  • As we just learned in point #2, the key to building a habit is doing it frequently and consistently — and it takes accountability to actually SHOW UP AND DO IT frequently and consistently
  • Therefore, when it comes to Chorus, if time zones allow, take live classes. The added accountability of having a live group, helps ensure we actually show up.
